Youth in the South Surrey / White Rock area take on a lot in their day to day lives, like mental health issues, addictions, social isolation and boredom. The Youth Collective’s mission is to bring community awareness to these issues, and tackle these challenges headfirst. To do so, they have taken charge with an innovative project, called The Youth Space, working to address the needs of youth by building their strength and creativity.

Our vision statement for the youth space is: “An accepting, safe and sober space for youth to have fun, escape their worries and express themselves in a positive way.”

We envision the Youth Space to be a safe, welcoming and friendly place for all youth to create a real future for themselves. This is a space that is led by youth for youth; is a place to connect; gain life skills; to inspire and be inspired; to help youth discover their passions; develop leadership skills as we will be running the space; gain employment skills; get help for personal problems; plan events and activities; and connect with community.

The only way the youth space will be successful is if the youth are the ones leading it. Since many youth are skeptical about adults, they lack the trust that they need to change. But if a friend that is a youth says to them “hey, I know this really cool place where we can relax and meet new people” then the youth would feel more inclined to join their friend to this new place.

We will leave you with a quote that expresses the impact of the youth space project on one of the youth:

"The Youth Space provided me with support and a sense of belonging in my neighbourhood. It became a type of relief for the disorder in my life and gave me an inclusive place to express myself… and I’m so happy I got to make all these cool friends who didn’t make me feel awkward and like an outsider."

Lastly, thank you so much to our dedicated volunteers, supportive community partners, and generous donors for all your support and encouragement. It’s an honour to have you all believe in our mission, and what the Youth Space can achieve for South Surrey/White Rock. It’s your encouragement and support that inspire us to continue working towards positive change in our community.

Sincerely,

The South Surrey/White Rock Youth Collective

YOUTH SPACE UPDATE

Spring is here and the Youth Space is excited to embrace and enjoy the weather of the Season! As the season warms up,  we are collaborating with the City of Surrey and other community partners to bring back to life the community garden outside of the Space. We are thankful for the support of Stacey from the City of Surrey to help provide the seeds and guidance as we begin our gardening adventures!  We hope to include more outdoor activities and enjoy using the BBQ this season – check out our monthly calendar to find out when they’re happening at the links below!

In the past three months, we have enjoyed a variety of events. New and creative activities such as the Youth Space Escape Room, and the Murder Mystery Dinner were a lot of fun, full of interaction and teamwork! We also got to enjoy 2 cultural dinners. In February, we embraced Japanese culture, enjoying the sweet and tasty version of a Tofu Teriyaki, then in March we celebrated Nowruz, the Persian New Year, with a Persian chicken stew, traditional salad, and a yogurt mix. Was a lot of fun to enjoy learning about these cultures and help prep – and of course – eat all the yummy food! The Youth Space very much appreciates the support of all community partners, including Nature’s Fare, in sponsoring items for the Cultural Dinners.

February also saw a series of Visioning Sessions to help guide the Youth Space moving forward. Thanks to Jenn, who helped us gather ideas and build the youth-adult bond with a variety of creative dialogues and activities. We look forward to bringing the vision into action!

Staffing wise, we are excited to announce and welcome a new Team Member, Hanna, who joined us in April. We are also thrilled to announce that the Youth Space has offered 4 youth positions as Youth Leader Interns. This includes three positions as Youth Program Support, and one Youth Collective Facilitator. As a youth-led initiative and in support of the youth-adult partnership we strive to have, this is a great leadership opportunity.

As always, we look forward to some exciting things coming up! The Youth Space celebrates its 2nd Anniversary in May. It will be a fun-packed celebration on May 3rd, with food, games and our resident DJ ,Cuzo, providing the bumping beats. Also coming on June 7th will be the Youth Space Queer Prom!

Look forward to seeing you all soon!

Halloween is a festive event and with the valued input of the youth driven Youth Collective group we hosted an exciting Halloween bash. It was a day with lots of candy and the youth were able to plan and enjoy a scavenger hunt, a piñata full of candy, a creative costume contest and a movie night.

Spotlight on Food at the Youth Space
“The food you’ve been providing me has made a huge difference. Now with the money I’ve saved I’m able to get some of the nicer things in life. I’ve also got your recipes magnetized to my fridge.”
 – participant, age 22.

The Youth Space feels like a family, especially when we sit down to share a meal together. Screens off, everyone pitches in, and we get to explore different cultures through our plates and with special guests (community volunteers who help us cook and share their experiences with us.) January we’ll be celebrating Lunar New Year with dumplings from China.
But the food has to come from somewhere.
We’ve begun a beautiful partnership with Nature’s Fare and every week they give us a few boxes of rescued food- food that is still edible, but because of some small imperfection -  a bruised peach / wrinkly peppers – was destined for the landfill. Instead now those bruised peaches and wrinkly peppers come to us, and we’re able to provide healthy, organic snacks to participants in the space, while reducing the amount of food that ends up going to waste. Some of the extras even go home with some of the youth and they’re able to stretch their dollars further.
We also pick up weekly from Sources Food Bank where we receive bread, bagels and occasionally some sweets.
We couldn’t do it without our wonderful community partners, and it means so much to our “Youth Space Family.”
We are always in need of culinary experts who are willing to donate time, food and kitchen supplies. If you’re interested in supporting us please contact Eva at youthspace@alexhouse.net or call or text 604-376-0582 (cell) or  778-545-9188 (office.)
The Youth Space is located in Bakerview Park, at 1845 154 St.
